Climbing Out of the Pit

on Sunday 17, July 2011

“I waited patiently for the Lord and He turned and heard my cry.  He lifted me out of the slimy pit and out of the mud and mire; He set my feet on a rock and gave me a firm place to stand.”

These words from Psalm 40 give us a beautiful picture of our initial salvation experience.  Yet sometimes we can still find ourselves in the ‘pits’ — stuck in the mud or experiencing a slippery place without firm footing, tossed about, discouraged and feeling helpless.  Then we cry to the Lord, and He comes to save us.  In His love and faithfulness, He lifts us up and out and plants our feet on the Rock once again.  Oh, the relief and joy of feeling the solid ground of His Word under our feet again.

Pits come in all sizes and shapes, and we occasionally find ourselves there for one reason or another.  But we don’t have to live there!  There is a lifting up.  James 1:2 says that the trying of our faith in times like these develops perseverance.  “I waited patiently for the Lord…”, so we can even gain some eternal benefits from life’s pits.

But thanks be to God!  For when we cry for help, He lovingly responds and gathers us in His arms, returning us to the solid path with a song in our hearts and praise on our lips.
