Following in Jesus' Footsteps

on Sunday 7, February 2010

Jesus invites us to follow him.  When he called his disciples, his purpose in asking them to follow him was to train them to take his place and continue his work.  In essence he was saying, “Come, follow me—Learn to do as I do, be as I am, and love as I love.”

When we look at the life of Jesus, it is easy to recognize the focus of his life.  He loved people!  His whole hearts’ desire was to reconcile his lost creation back into fellowship with him and his Father.  As ‘followers’ of Christ, this must become our prime focus as well.

When I look at my own life, I do not see this passion—not as it should be, anyway.  Our daily focus is probably more along the lines of managing tasks, completing assignments, doing a good job for our employer, paying bills, etc.  Rarely do we consider the eternal destiny of the people we encounter as we move through our day.  And yet this consumed Jesus’ life here on earth.  His passion was to find the lost, fill the empty, and heal the hurting.

I believe we need to reevaluate our priorities.  The eternal destiny of the people around us must become more critical to us.  How can this happen?  By loving God with all of our heart, our soul and our strength—by following Jesus.
