God is Listening

Have you ever wondered about the effectiveness of your prayers?  Are they reaching higher than the ceiling?  Are they registering in the heart of God?

James 5:16 says, “The fervent prayers of a righteous man are powerful and effective.”  That should be encouraging!  Then he goes on to compare our prayers to that of Elijah.  Verse 17 says, “Elijah was a man just like us.  He prayed and the heavens withheld rain…he prayed again and the heavens gave rain.”

If you read the story in 1 Kings 17, it seems that the shutting of the heavens came as a word of knowledge to Elijah.  It was God’s judgment on King Ahab.  Three years later Elijah stood on Mount Carmel and challenged the prophets of Baal, and God sent the fire.  Then it was time for the heavens to open and the rain to come again.

I’m not sure why it seemed so difficult to see the restoration of rain, whether it just took time for the clouds to build up or if perhaps it had become too personal with Elijah and he needed time on his knees to sort that out.  The point is he didn’t quit.  He put his head between his knees and didn’t stop praying even when it took 7 trips to the top of the mountain for his servant.  Eventually rain came! His prayers were answered, and God will answer yours, too. He is listening—don’t give up!
