The Power of Words

“If anyone says to this mountain, ’Go throw yourself into the sea’, and does not doubt in his heart, but believes that what he says will happen, it will be done for him.”  Mark 11:23

We are all occasionally faced with mountains that seem immovable—fixed barriers or hindrances in our lives.  According to Jesus’ teaching in Mark 11, these mountains are affected by our words.  Words are powerful.  Proverbs 18:21 says, “Life and death are in the power of the tongue,” and the apostle James says that the tongue can corrupt the whole person and set the course of his life.  WOW!  Our words can build up and edify, and our words can tear down.  We choose.

Matthew 12:34 states, “Out of the overflow of the heart the mouth speaks.”  It is therefore wise to listen to what comes from our own lips, since it can tell us about the condition of our heart. And likewise, our heart, our faith and our attitude can be easily changed by what we speak.  Perhaps this is why in the teaching Jesus gave about moving mountains, he also dealt with forgiveness.

God has challenged us to speak positive, life-giving, faith-producing words.  Expressing words of faith gives the Holy Spirit what he needs to put all of heaven’s creative power into motion on your behalf.  You have the power in your confession to move that mountain and call those things that are not as though they were.  So speak faith!
